Short answer: I'm Rahil Jain. In 14 years of corporate gifts for employees, HR heads ask me the same five things on almost every call: what's a fair budget, what do employees actually want, how do we handle 500+ home addresses, is it taxable, and how do we avoid looking cheap without overspending. Here's how I actually answer them.
Updated September 2026.

What's a fair corporate gift budget per employee?
Most companies land in the ₹500-₹1,500 standard band for regular employee and festive gifting; token gifts sit at ₹150-₹500 for event giveaways, and senior staff can move into the ₹1,500-₹5,000 premium band. I always ask HR heads to pick the band by relationship first — a 3,000-person company gifting everyone equally needs a different approach than a 40-person startup gifting individually.
What do employees actually want as a corporate gift?
Almost never company merchandise for its own sake — they want something they'd have bought for themselves. Practical, well-made items outperform generic branded goods: a good steel bottle, a proper desk organiser, a diary they'll actually use. I steer HR heads away from "logo on everything" and toward "logo placed quietly, product chosen generously". The gift should work first, brand second.
Steel Sports Bottle 750 ml (MGH 2165)₹390 · MOQ 50 branded
PU Diary with Arrow Buckle Clasp (8029-22)₹385 · MOQ 50 branded
Bamboo Eco Desk Gift Set₹1,000 · MOQ 50 branded
Bear Print Slim Kids Flask 500 ml (MGH 7065)₹415 · MOQ 50 branded
How do we handle gifting to 500+ employees across different cities?
This is the operational question I get most from larger companies, and it's solvable with one habit: a clean spreadsheet with name, complete address including pincode, and phone number, shared once, in the format we provide. We deliver pan-India to 25+ states. What derails timelines isn't the number of recipients — it's incomplete addresses discovered mid-dispatch. I ask for this list early even before the product is finalised.
Are corporate gifts to employees taxable in India?
Gifts up to ₹5,000 per employee per financial year are exempt as a perquisite under Income-tax Rule 3(7)(iv); anything above that, the excess is taxable in the employee's hands. Most standard and even premium-band gifts I quote stay under this threshold; it's leadership-tier gifts above ₹5,000 where HR needs to flag this to payroll. Confirm specifics with your CA — I say this on every call, not as a disclaimer, but because tax treatment can shift and I'm not qualified to give final tax advice.

How do I keep gifting fair across a large, varied team?
Same product, same value, delivered on the same day — that's the fairness test I recommend. Where roles differ meaningfully (say, factory staff versus corporate office), it's fine to vary the item, but I'd avoid varying the visible value within the same role band; that's where gifting programmes generate resentment rather than goodwill. Details anonymised, but this is a pattern I've seen: a company once gifted managers a premium item and staff a token item for the same festival, and the mismatch generated more internal chatter than the gifting programme was ever meant to create.

What do I tell HR heads worried about budget cuts mid-programme?
Cut headcount coverage or cut per-person spend, but don't cut quality on a smaller list — a slightly smaller, well-chosen gift protects morale better than a larger but visibly cheap one across everyone. If your programme spans multiple festivals a year, it's often better to spend more at Diwali and less at smaller occasions than spread a flat budget thin across every calendar event.
