The Hamper Packaging Mistakes I See Most Often

Corporate Diwali hamper with brass diya, sweets box and packaging

Short answer: The biggest hamper packaging mistake I see is companies choosing the box before the contents, so items rattle loose or do not fit. At Meru Gifting we build corporate hampers from the inside out: pick items first, then a box sized to hold them snugly, with brand-colour packaging added last.

A finished hamper - the box was chosen after these items, not before.

What is the most common hamper packaging mistake?

Choosing the box first. A client tells me they want a premium-looking box, we source one, and then the items they want to put inside either rattle around in too much space or barely fit. I now insist on the opposite order: finalise the contents, then size the box, then decorate it.

Why does loose packing matter for a corporate hamper?

Because a hamper that arrives with items shifted to one corner looks careless, even if nothing broke. First impressions on a client gift matter more than most people budget for. We use fitted inserts, tissue, or shredded paper depending on the contents, and we test-pack a sample before a bulk run ships.

Mistake What goes wrong Our fix
Box chosen before contents Items rattle or overflow Size the box to a finalised item list
No fitted insert Items shift and scuff each other in transit Custom insert or shredded-paper padding
Branding added last-minute Logo looks pasted on, not designed in Brand colours planned into the box from the mock-up stage
No weight check before bulk dispatch Courier surcharges or damaged lids Sample-weigh and test-ship before the full batch

How do you decide what goes inside a hamper?

I ask three questions: who is receiving it, what is the occasion, and what per-person budget are we working with. A Diwali hamper for clients gets diyas, a decor piece and packaging that photographs well. A hamper for a 200-person all-employee gift needs items that survive rougher handling in transit.

Does packaging cost eat into the gift budget?

A little, and I tell clients upfront rather than hide it inside a per-piece price. Fitted boxes and brand-colour wraps cost more than a generic carton, but a hamper that survives transit looking intentional is worth the extra few percent, especially for client-facing gifts.

Generic carton

  • Lower cost
  • Faster to source
  • No brand colours
  • Higher risk of shifting in transit

Fitted, branded box

  • Higher cost per unit
  • Needs a mock-up cycle
  • Brand colours and logo placement
  • Items stay secure in transit

Building a hamper this season?

Send us your item list and headcount and we will size the box and packaging before you commit to a design.

What is the most common corporate hamper packaging mistake?

Choosing the box before finalising the contents, which leaves items rattling loose or not fitting at all. We size the box after the item list is confirmed.

Does Meru Gifting offer brand-colour packaging?

Yes, brand-colour packaging is available and is planned in from the mock-up stage rather than added at the last minute.

How do you stop items shifting inside a hamper during delivery?

We use fitted inserts or shredded-paper padding sized to the confirmed contents, and test-pack a sample before a bulk run ships.

Does better packaging cost more?

Slightly. A fitted, branded box costs more than a generic carton, but it protects the contents and looks intentional, which matters most for client and leadership gifts.

What is a typical hamper budget per person?

Hampers typically run ₹500-₹5,000 per person depending on contents, with premium client hampers often ₹1,500-₹5,000.
