Why I Insist on a Free Mock-Up Before Every Bulk Order

Why do I refuse to skip the mock-up step, even when a client is in a hurry?

Because I've seen what happens when we skip it — not at Meru Gifting, but at studios that don't insist on this step, and clients tell me about it after the fact. A logo printed 3mm too small, a pantone that looks navy on screen and prints black, a diary spine that hides half the wordmark. None of these are catastrophic on their own, but multiplied across 300 or 500 pieces, they become a reprint, a delay, and an awkward conversation with a CHRO about why the gifts look "off". A free mock-up costs us a day or two. A bad bulk run costs everyone weeks.

What exactly do you get in a Meru Gifting mock-up?

A physical or high-resolution digital sample of your actual product with your actual logo, brand colours and placement — not a generic template. For most custom logo gifts, we produce this within 2-3 working days of receiving your artwork. You see exact colour, size, placement and finish before we commit to MOQ 50 or above. I ask every client the same question when they approve it: "if this arrived on your desk tomorrow, would you be proud to hand it to someone?" If the answer isn't an immediate yes, we adjust before production, not after.

What's the real cost of skipping this step?

Money, mostly, but also trust. A reprint on a 300-piece order can add a week to your timeline and, depending on the item, 15-25% to your cost once you account for wasted stock and rush charges. I've turned down requests to "just go straight to bulk to save time" more than once — not because I enjoy saying no, but because the mock-up almost always surfaces something worth fixing: a logo that's too small at 25mm, a colour that doesn't survive UV printing on bamboo, a strap length that looks fine in a render but wrong in hand.

How long does the mock-up add to my overall timeline?

Usually 2-4 working days, folded into our standard 7-15 working day turnaround for branded bulk orders — it's not extra time bolted on, it's the first stage of the same timeline. What it removes is the much longer delay of a reprint discovered after delivery. If your event date is fixed, tell us upfront; we'll sequence the mock-up so it never becomes the bottleneck.

What do I tell clients who've been burnt before by a vendor that skipped this?

I hear this often enough that I don't think it's rare: a company orders bulk-branded gifts from an online gifting marketplace, receives them a week before an event, and finds the logo is stretched or off-colour, with no time to fix it.
